Direct Hire | $50,000-$55,000/year | Full-Time

Manpower is hiring a Grounds Supervisor for a respected organization in the Altoona area. This is a direct hire opportunity for a candidate who excels in landscaping, team leadership, and hands-on grounds maintenance. If you have experience with cemetery operations, landscaping, and equipment operation, including backhoe experienceyou may be a great fit.

Position Overview

This is a working supervisor role combining fieldwork with leadership duties. You'll be responsible for overseeing daily operations related to grounds maintenance, burials, equipment upkeep, and crew management.

Key Responsibilities

Accurately layout and supervise the excavation of graves or opening of mausoleum crypts

Oversee all burials and ensure proper ground restoration and marker placement

Maintain cemetery grounds, roads, gardens, buildings, vehicles, and equipment

Assign and monitor daily field tasks, evaluate staff performance, and provide training and guidance

Hire, train, discipline, and terminate maintenance staff as needed in coordination with administration

Serve as Safety Officer: enforce policies, conduct meetings, and ensure chemical/material safety compliance

Assist in capital budget planning and manage inventory of tools, materials, and supplies

Develop and execute seasonal landscaping schedules (mowing, trimming, fertilizing, leaf removal, etc.)

Oversee facility upkeep including cleanliness and maintenance of restrooms, kitchens, and storage areas

Regularly inspect the property for hazards such as fallen branches, potholes, animal damage, or vandalism

Communicate daily with administrative staff to coordinate funerals, maintenance requests, and work orders

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required

Minimum 5 years of landscaping experience and/or 5 years of crew management

Valid driver's license and insurability under company policy

Strong mechanical skills and experience operating:

Mowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, tractors (manual transmission), backhoe (preferred), air compressors, pickup/dump trucks

Ability to read and interpret manuals, write reports, and communicate effectively with staff and guests

Basic math skills and strong problem-solving ability in a dynamic, outdoor work environment

Physical Demands

Ability to stand for 60+ minutes and walk long distances

Ability to sit on equipment for extended periods (2+ hours)

Frequent stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, or crawling

Lift/move 50 lbs regularly; up to 100 lbs with assistance

Tolerance for outdoor weather conditions year-round

Exposure to high areas, fumes, chemicals, and vibrations is expected

Must pass a 7-year background check and drug screen
