The Parks Superintendent performs administrative and supervisory duties to implement all aspects of Parks and Cemetery operations with emphasis on buildings and grounds maintenance. This position manages and performs the day-to-day maintenance operations of the City parks and cemetery and assists in long-term planning. The position supervises Department fulltime, part-time, and seasonal employees. The position assists in the preparation of the annual budget and monitors spending to implement the budget. The work schedule may include weekends and holidays during special events and may include performing burials and interments. The position is under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director with considerable leeway for independent judgment and initiative, especially in the day-to-day operations. The position requires five years' experience in park maintenance, grounds keeping, or construction. A Pesticide Applicators License and Class B CDL, and one of the following certified: Safety Playground Technician, Certified Arborist. The position works in a public building and outdoor environment with exposure to power and light equipment operation, hazardous chemicals, and adverse weather conditions. This position has contact with the public under occasional stressful and emotional conditions.

Supervises and performs operations and maintenance duties on City Park system and cemetery buildings and grounds;
Supervises the services delivered to the public using the park and cemetery facilities;
Supervises skilled and semi-skilled employees, including seasonal workers, by assigning and overseeing tasks, monitoring work output, training, scheduling, monitoring safety practices, and evaluating;
Assists in the preparation of the Department annual budget and monitors spending to ensure budget implementation;
Maintains inventory of supplies, including purchasing;
Prepares facilities for and works during special events and rentals including, but not limited to, weddings, concerts, sporting events, festivals, and holidays;
Coordinates with public and private party user groups, completing necessary site preparation, monitoring the facility during events, and assisting the public as needed;
Works with other city departments to complete special projects including, but not limited to, snow removal, graffiti removal, tree pruning, weather event cleanups, and related tasks;
Creates and maintains Park system records, documents, logs, and reports;
Prepares and presents oral and written reports;
Supervises and performs grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, turf management, pesticide and herbicide application, tree care, shrub and planting bed maintenance, and hardscape installation in City park systemand other City buildings;
Uses and maintains a variety of hand and power tools;
Uses and maintains a variety of light equipment including truck, mowers, tractors, and backhoes;
Inspects public facilities, parks, playgrounds, and playground equipment for hazards and directs repairs, ensuring safety of facilities;
Presents reports to City Council, as needed;
Responds to management's, supervisor's, co-workers' and citizens' questions and comments in a courteous, thorough and timely manner;
Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines, and sets project priorities;
Maintains strict confidentiality of all matters;
Assists other department and City employees as needed or requested;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises and assists with City special events and activities;
Coordinates and monitors co-sponsored events, tournaments, programs, and activities with outside groups, school districts, colleges, and agencies;
Performs the duties of Parks and Recreation Director in that employee's absence;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED;
Idaho Class B CDL license with airbrake endorsement is required;
Pesticide Applicator's License required;
At least one certification for Safety Playground Technician
Other certifications, including backflow technician, landscape technician, and/or arborist, may also be considered;
Five (5) years' experience in park and/or landscape maintenance, grounds keeping, or construction, and supervisory experience is preferred; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
