MSAD #35Position Title: Custodian/Groundskeeper PositionDepartment: FacilityReports to: Head Custodian/Facilities CoordinatorDate Reviewed: July 22, 2025Position Summary:To complete the maintenance and repair of both the school facility and grounds to provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop.Qualifications: A high school degree or a GED is the minimum requirement for the position.Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check Certificate eligibility required.A certificate of good health must be signed by a licensed physician.Ability to work in high placesAbility to routinely lift/move objects utilizing appropriate equipment.Duties and Responsibilities:The responsibilities outlined below are representative and do not encompass or define all tasks that may be required by this position.Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of both the facility and grounds.Reports immediately to the Head Custodian/Facilities Coordinator any damage to school property or in need of repair.Some examples of daily dutiesUnlock main entrance, start warmer in concession area for kitchen, assess main entrance for trash or problems, and unlock dumpstersSweep, wet mop and organize the cafe for the start of the day.Respond to calls for spills, vomit clean up, water leaks etc..Repair non-working sinks, toilets, urinals, paint.Repair walls as needed in the interior of the building.Check fire extinguishers for charge level monthly in the building.Check and monitor life safety systems, exit signs, safety lights, etc..Replace ceiling tiles as needed.Repair sheetrock, floors and stair treads as needed.Reset circuit breakers and assess problems as needed.Outside paint sports fields, clean and maintain paint machines, setting the layout of the fields for sports.Help maintain district grounds when needed (mow lawns, weedwack, weed gardens and snow removal, etc.)Assist with outdoor athletics (line fields, set up for games, clean up after games and take care of equipment, etc)Work on small construction projects, paint exterior doors, walls, dugouts, completed trim etc.Clean bathrooms as needed.Do trash removal in the cafe between lunches, sweep cafe floor, sweep kitchen floor, remove trash in cafe and kitchen at end of school day.Sweep and mop cafe and kitchen at the end of day.Receive deliveries as required or needed.Stock paper in copier areas as needed.Maintain functional interior and exterior doors.Mount sports records and plaques on walls.Equipment maintenance on floor machines, bathroom machines and carpet machines, etc.Repair or replace toilet paper and soap dispensers as needed.Help Kitchen repair things as needed and if possible.Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.Any other duties as assigned by the head custodian and/or Facility Coordinator.Understands and complies with requirements as outlined in the Custodial Handbook.Complies with OSHAs standards 29 CFR-1910.Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with colleagues, staff, students and community members.The custodian should use discretion when completing all physical tasks to use support and/or other mechanical tools to aid in the completion of a task. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours to meet the demands of the duties needed to be completed.
