The Groundskeeper position reports to the Parks Superintendent and Parks Supervisors/Chiefs and will serve a key role in the daily operations and maintenance of City parks, sports fields, trails, open spaces, waterfront facilities, restrooms, and all other department associated work. This position will work with numerous departments, agencies, the local community, and other groups daily while performing their daily tasks and responsibilities.
This position works daily on the maintenance and operations of City Parks, sports fields, trails, open spaces, waterfront facilities, restrooms, art installations, and all other department associated work. While this position reports directly to the Parks Superintendent and other supervisors in the Parks Division, this position is expected to communicate, interact, and take joint direction from multiple other City Departments and/or groups. The daily work of this position requires an individual who is a self-starter, can work both independently and cooperatively, has good communication skills, and above all possesses a great attitude. Regular interaction with the public is to be expected, all while representing the Parks & Recreation Department and The City in the most professional manner.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in equipment and vehicle operation, parks/grounds/landscape/tree maintenance, homeless encampment cleanup, pesticide/fertilizer applications, sports field maintenance, irrigation maintenance/repair, etc. Previous experience can be attributed to past employment or any other experience working on and/or maintaining vehicles and/or equipment.

Certifications and licenses such as Certifications and licenses such as Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM), Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor Certification, Certified Backflow Prevention Tester, Certified Arborist, Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL), CDPR Certified Applicator License or Certified Applicator Certificate (QAL or QAC), CPR/First Aid Certification, , OSHA 10/OSHA 40, along with any others pertaining to the Parks/Grounds/Turf/Tree Maintenance field are highly desired.

DEFINITION : Under the immediate direction of the Parks and Grounds Manager, performs routine to less skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of parks and grounds and assists Parks and Grounds Workers with work assignments. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS -- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions : Assists in the planting, watering, mowing, weeding, trimming and renovation of turf; rakes leaves; cleans walkways, fields and other related facilities; picks up litter and debris and loads on trucks; cleans and maintains park restrooms and other recreational facilities; assists with planting, transplanting, removing, cultivating and watering flowers and foundation shrubs; operates walk-behind power mower, edger, blower and other related equipment; performs minor maintenance on park facilities including painting and replacing minor parts; performs preventive maintenance and repair work on park equipment and tools.

Marginal Functions : Performs other duties and responsibilities as required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES : Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license may be required; may be required to obtain current American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Multi-Media and/or Standard First Aid certificate within twelve (12) months of employment. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Ability to wear and use air purifying respirators as regulated by Cal/OSHA. Must work a flexible schedule, which could include varying shifts, weekends, and holidays.

WORKING CONDITIONS : Travel from site to site; some exposure to dust and noise; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions.
