DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, perform a variety of skilled to semi-skilled duties including planning, installing, repairing and maintaining manual and automatic irrigation systems such as battery-operated, hydraulic and electrical irrigation controllers; low voltage irrigation control wires, PVC, PE, galvanized iron and copper irrigation lines; automatic and manual valves, subterranean drip, drip hosing, and tubing, mechanical or hydraulic irrigation heads. Monitor, adjust, and repair irrigation systems throughout campus for optimal performance. Identify and resolve problems with irrigation controls, wiring, piping and sprinkler heads. Direct the work of laborers and landscape/grounds equipment operators in the excavation required for irrigation system installations, maintenance and repairs. Establish and monitor irrigation schedules through central irrigation control system (MaxiCom). Operate, maintain, manipulate and extract data from central irrigation system to ensure proper irrigation of campus landscapes, prepare water usage/consumption reports and monitor overall functioning of central system. Train Landscape Services employees in irrigation system repair and modification procedures and techniques. Operate and maintain a variety of power tools, hand tools and trenching equipment related to the trade. Perform trenching, backfilling and other excavation activities required for irrigation installation, repair and maintenance. Perform other landscape maintenance functions as assigned. Maintain tools and equipment in clean, proper working order.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Journey-level experience and demonstrated knowledge of commercial irrigation systems, both manual and automatic. Experience and skill to plan, install, repair and modify a variety of irrigation systems in a large academic, hospital or commercial setting.

  • Experience installing and maintaining battery-operated, hydraulic and electrical irrigation controllers; low voltage irrigation control wires, PVC, PC, galvanized iron and copper irrigation lines; automatic and manual valves, subterranean drip, drip hosing, and tubing, mechanical or hydraulic irrigation heads.

  • Experience operating commonly used hand and power grounds related equipment and tools such as shovel, trenchers, tractors, roto-tillers, air-compressor, backhoe, jackhammer, and other commonly used larger pieces of power-driven equipment.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and sound judgment skills.

  • Knowledge of live plant materials and horticultural requirements and practices.

  • Ability to effectively plan/prioritize workload and carry out assignments within established timelines.

  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance program (PMs) requirements standard to irrigation systems.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and flexibility to adjust to changing priorities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing, and electronically.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation and ability to work in a diverse environment with department personnel, faculty, staff and students.

  • Experience reading technical blueprints related to landscape irrigation specifications and plans.

  • Strong attention to detail with ability to check work and data for completion and overall accuracy.

  • Experienced use of standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, electronic mail, timekeeping systems and web-based applications.

  • Experienced user of commercial irrigation control systems and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.

  • Experience working within water management ordinances and regulations preferred.

  • Experience with MaxiCom commercial irrigation systems and Maximo Computerized Maintenance Management Systems preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • DOJ/FBI Live Scan check and clearance required prior to hire.

  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

  • DMV check and clearance required prior to hire.

  • Must be able to work overtime or flexible schedules as needed.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $80,680 - $80,680 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $38.64 - $38.64
