Job Description
At the University of Notre Dame, our landscapes are more than scenery - they're an integral part of the campus experience. We're looking for a Plant Installation Supervisor to lead the charge in bringing our landscaping visions to life.
Position Summary
As the Plant Installation Supervisor, you'll oversee the planning, installation, and ongoing care of in-house landscape projects across campus. You'll direct a skilled crew of groundskeepers, coordinate with contractors, ensure the health of plantings from past and present projects, and keep all work on time, within budget, and to the highest horticultural standards. This role blends hands-on work with leadership, planning, and collaboration across multiple university departments.
Key Responsibilities
Landscape Installation & Maintenance
- Lead and oversee campus-wide plant installations, ensuring adherence to Notre Dame's quality and design standards.
- Supervise crews during landscape renovation projects - including planting, mulching, pruning, and fertilizing.
- Coordinate with Utilities, Planning, Design & Construction, Athletic Grounds Services, and Landscape Grounds Services to plan weekly and monthly project calendars.
- Monitor plantings from current and past projects for health, irrigation needs, and overall vigor; manage replacements when necessary.
- Oversee procurement of woody shrubs, trees, herbaceous perennials, and groundcovers, ensuring suitability for Michiana's climate zone.
- Train and supervise seasonal and permanent staff on safe and effective use of heavy equipment.
Quality Control & Safety
- Establish and conduct routine inspections of installations, checking for proper depth, plant health, and adherence to specifications.
- Maintain high standards when working with external contractors and suppliers.
- Lead seasonal operations, including leaf clean-up in fall and snow removal in winter (November-March, 2 PM-11 PM), with potential for overtime and holiday work.
- Facilitate monthly safety meetings and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Professional Development & Industry Knowledge
- Maintain active membership with professional organizations such as the Professional Grounds Management Society and the Association of Physical Plant Administrators.
- Stay current on new industry trends, techniques, and technologies through conferences, webinars, and publications.
Equipment Oversight
- Direct weekly maintenance and safety checks for heavy equipment, ensuring operational readiness and compliance with OSHA VPP guidelines.
- Document maintenance activities and create work orders in AIM for all equipment.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
- Minimum 7 years in landscape installation and crew supervision; 6-10 years of specialized training/skills in all facets of landscape operations preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and crew management skills.
- Expertise in plant selection and installation for hardiness zone requirements.
- Proficient in heavy equipment operation and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret landscape plans.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills across diverse teams.
