HEAD GROUNDSKEEPER

Maintenance and Custodial Department

Purpose: The Head Groundskeeper helps ensure the beauty, functionality and safety of District grounds, parking lots, playgrounds, and athletic fields by organizing and leading the grounds maintenance and landscaping operations.

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Indirectly Reports to: Director of Facilities & Operations and School Administrators

Nature of Work: The Head Groundskeeper performs work of a recurring nature under general supervision. The nature of the work requires following established policies and procedures. Because this job requires leading the activities of groundskeeping staff, the position requires strong organizing and communication abilities.

Supervision Exercised: No direct supervision exercised, but significant indirect supervisory and coordination responsibilities. Provides training and leadership for Grounds staff.

Interface: Primarily interfaces with school administrators, school personnel,students, and community members.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Leads and organizes groundskeeping operations to ensure District fields, lawns and other outdoor areas are kept in a clean, orderly and safe condition.

  2. Coordinates groundskeeping activities, including establishing schedules for irrigation, mowing, spraying, fertilizing, pruning, and other routine

groundskeeping duties.

  1. Responsible for coordinating specific tasks in response to work orders. 4. Provides direction and guidance to groundskeeping and custodial personnel. 5. Cuts, edges, mows, trims and removes grass.

  2. Removes weeds and invasive vegetation.

  3. Prunes trees and other shrubbery to maintain their shape and improve growth. 8. Picks up litter, sweeps walkways, removes leaves and snow; performs other basic maintenance tasks as needed.

  4. Safely operates commercial-sized agricultural tractors and equipment. 10. Operates safely a variety of light power equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, weed eaters and leaf blowers.

  5. Maintains groundskeeping equipment in proper working condition, including performing minor maintenance work and light engine repair as needed.

  6. Inspects, monitors and maintains wastewater treatment facilities and irrigation equipment in accordance with state and local water authority requirements. 13. Prepares athletic fields for practices, games and other events by laying out lines and

other markings in accordance with established specifications.

  1. Operates irrigation equipment and repairs irrigation systems as needed. 15. Applies fertilizers and pest control chemicals in accordance with established procedures and safety protocols.

  2. Coordinates and assists Maintenance Supervisor with spraying program. 17. Completes and coordinates landscape/grounds projects including large repairs and capital projects.

  3. Attends scheduled Maintenance & Grounds meetings and monthly safety meetings. 19. Maintains effective and respectful working relationships with staff,students, and community members.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Must have demonstrated experience in landscaping or a related field.

  3. Must pass a criminal background check.

  4. A Valid Oregon Pesticide Applicator License (Full licensure required with one year of employment)

  5. Must be able to read, write, understand and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. A Valid Oregon Wastewater Operator Certificate

  2. Must possess a valid Oregon pesticide applicator license.

Working Conditions:

The Head Groundskeeper works mostly outdoors, in all kinds of weather and occasionally in the dark. Most of the work involves activities of a physical nature. Seasonal weather-related activity such as cleaning leaves in the fall, ice and snow in the winter and maintenance of irrigation equipment year round and will require prolonged work time outside. Certain essential job functions, such as the application of herbicides, may require the Head Groundskeeper to work on weekends to minimize impact on students and staff. In coordination with the supervisor, the work schedule may be adjusted to exchange regular weekday shifts for weekend days as needed.

The incumbent will be regularly exposed to odors, fumes, oil, grease, dirt and dust, as well as inclement weather. Other potential hazards include but are not limited to pesticide chemicals, sharp objects, power equipment,slippery surfaces, and operating equipment in inclement weather.

The Head Groundskeeper will spend most work hours standing, and will in the course of the workday regularly be required to bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, reach and climb ladders - sometimes for prolonged periods. The incumbent must possess the physical strength and dexterity necessary to operate various types of groundskeeping equipment and be able to

repeatedly lift 50 lbs. independently and more than 50 lbs. with assistance.
