Seasonal Crew Person

The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the City and carry-out general duties related to the functions of the Public Works Department.

The Seasonal Laborer works under the direction of the Operations Crew Lead.

The Public Works Department Seasonal Crew Person may be involved in work in all City departments at some time as required by management. The duties assigned to the Seasonal Crew Person are to be conducted in a safe, proficient, and professional manner. Major duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operations Division
  1. Respond to weather clean-up emergencies such as tree debris removal.
  2. Assist with mowing, pruning, mulching, weeding, tree maintenance and planting, using fertilizers and pesticides, and all horticultural duties for the City of Milton Right-of-Ways, trails, parks, cemetery, and public facilities.
  3. Assist in the maintenance and construction of park benches, picnic tables, and playgrounds.
  4. Clean and maintain restrooms and pavilions to expected condition.
  5. Assist with litter/trash collection and general overall park grounds cleanliness.
  6. Assist the company contracted for garbage collection when requested by the Public Works Director.
  7. Install and maintain signs on City property.
Utilities Division
  1. Paints hydrants and other Utility equipment.
  2. Assist water and wastewater utility staff as needed for various duties.
General
  1. Respond to questions, concerns, comments, and other issues related to the Public Works Department from the general public, elected officials, or other staff members or refer them to the appropriate staff member.
  2. Assist other departments as needed and directed by the Operations Crew Lead or their designee.
  3. Carry cell phone and/or radio to maintain availability during normally scheduled workhours.
  4. Operate vehicles and equipment as needed.
  5. Report any vehicle or equipment malfunctions to the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director for repair.
  6. Report any damage to City facilities to the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director for repair.
  7. Maintain proper daily maintenance of equipment.
  8. Operate City trucks and vehicles on and off public roadways in a safe manner.
  9. Assist in the training of personnel when requested to do so by the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director.
  10. Abide by all safety rules and procedures and participate in safety training and education programs offered by the City.
  11. Report to the appropriate staff member daily assignments as they are completed and keep necessary records
  12. Work with other departments, private property owners, and other facilities as assigned.
  13. Maintain work area in a neat and organized manner.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Additional education and/or experience as required to perform the essential functions of this position.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Public Works Department employees, seasonal employees, the general public, and other City departments.
  4. Ability to perform duties with considerable independent judgment and initiative under limited supervision.
  5. Ability to follow oral and written direction.
  6. Ability to keep daily records of completed tasks.
  7. Ability and skill to operate City trucks, vehicles, and equipment in a safe manner.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must have valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age to comply with safety/legal regulations
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
  1. Office Equipment Copy/Scan/Fax Machine, Computer, 10-Key Calculator, Printer, and Laminator.
  2. Hand Tools Non-electrical hand tools (hammers, wrenches, etc.); electrical power tools(saws, drills, etc.); gas powered tools (weed eater, chain saw, etc.); and yard/garden tools(shovel, rake, etc.)
  3. Communication Equipment Telephone, cell phone, and radio.
  4. Vehicles Automobiles, backhoe, brush chipper, fork lift, front end loader / grader, heavy truck / snow plow, light truck (pick up), mower (rider and push), sewer jetter, skid steer, and street sweeper.
  5. Miscellaneous Tools/Equipment Air compressor, amp meter, cement saw, crack sealer, drill press, grinder, micrometer, rulers, scales, protractors, walk behind striper, vehicle jack, voltmeter, welder / welding equipment, and air monitor.
  6. Medical Apparatus / Equipment First aid equipment and AED.
  7. Cleaning Equipment Vacuum and broom.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to exert physical effort to complete the assigned task. This may include, but is not limited to, some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting. The employee may be required to carry, push, and/or pull objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. This position also works in designated confined spaces using appropriate safety precautions.

  1. This position is exposed to the following conditions: dirt, dust, heat, cold, noise, fumes, odors, wetness / humidity, vibrations, sudden temperature changes, and darkness.
  2. This position occasionally encounters the following: electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, confined spaces, and heights above 10 ft.
  3. This position encounters the following: chemical hazards and moving vehicles traffic.
  4. The work is performed in a variety of settings including outdoors (extreme heat or cold),shop / warehouse, vehicle, streets, and indoor office setting.
  5. Requires use of protective devices such as facemasks, hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
  6. Emergency work, which includes snow removal, is sometimes required during nonstandard hours and may require overtime
  7. There is occasional interaction with the general public.
