Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director- Personnel Commission. **This position is 40hrs per week/ 12 months worked, District-wide and is Benefits eligible.** *This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill this vacancy at the Facilities, Maintenance, & Operations Department and future vacancies within the District* *All qualified candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for six months* BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; prepare field for athletic events and other activities. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Groundskeeper I - The Groundskeeper I is the entry level classification in the series and performs general grounds maintenance duties at an assigned elementary, middle or continuation high school site. Groundskeeper II - The Groundskeeper II classification performs a variety of independent grounds maintenance duties including the extensive preparation of athletic fields at an assigned high school site. Lead Groundskeeper - The Lead Groundskeeper classification plans, organizes and participates in grounds maintenance and landscaping activities at various sites to meet the needs of the District. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Mow, edge, trim and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; prepare and fertilize soil; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system; inspect grounds areas for maintenance needs and report conditions to appropriate personnel. E Plant, cultivate, prune, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; edge walkways; sweep, pick up and dispose of cuttings, branches, leaves, and other debris following assigned tasks; haul sand, dirt, fertilizer, and other materials as directed. E Perform a variety of duties related to the preparation, lining, marking and dragging of athletic fields and related areas; operate field painters and chalkers; measure play areas according to established guidelines. E Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper and trash on grounds areas, parking lots, athletic fields, and other assigned areas. E Operate a variety of power-driven tools equipment such as tractors, mowers, edgers, blowers, sweepers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and other equipment used in grounds work; drive a vehicle to conduct work. E Utilize standard landscaping hand tools such as pruners, loppers, saws, shovels, hoes and rakes. E Apply pest and weed control methods to eradicate weeds, insects and other pests according to established procedures. E Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform minor maintenance on equipment such as changing blades, greasing and changing oil; perform minor repairs as needed. E Communicate with other staff, faculty, administrators and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues of maintenance, repairs, safety, and other groundskeeping related issues. E Participate in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems as assigned; adjust, repair and replace water lines and irrigation heads as necessary. E Assist and collaborate with outside contractors on special projects. E Maintain and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) for preventing contaminants from contacting storm water runoff. E Perform a variety of related grounds duties including applying asphalt cold patch, pouring concrete, installing and maintaining fences. E Respond to emergency grounds issues as required, including drain flooding, product delivery, downed trees and other issues. E Maintain routine records related to assigned activities. E Participate in ongoing training and staff development. Perform related duties as assigned. At the end of some of the duty statements, there is an " E" which identifies essential duties required of the classification. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: One year of grounds maintenance experience which would demonstrate the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the typical duties of the position. Experience with athletic field lining and maintenance desirable. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class C driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor work environment. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard/keypad and a variety of tools and equipment. Bending at the waist or crouching. Kneeling for extended periods of time. Walking or standing for extended periods of time. Reaching overhead, horizontally and below the shoulders. Digging. Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling moderately heavy objects (50 lbs.) as needed for the position. Heavy physical labor. Work on uneven or unimproved ground and slippery surfaces. Sufficient hearing and seeing in order to safely perform the duties of the position. Climbing in and out of grounds equipment. HAZARDS: Exposure to chemicals used in pest control. Working around and with machinery having moving parts. Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases, pesticides. Exposure to noise and vibration. Climbing ladders and working from heights.
