The 1st Assistant Superintendent is responsible for daily operations and administrative functions of the golf course, ensuring that all maintenance activities are conducted efficiently and to the highest standards. This role involves direct oversight of the courses maintenance staff and coordination with various departments to maintain optimal playing conditions and course aesthetics. In the absence of the Superintendent, the 1st Assistant Superintendent will assume full responsibility for course operations.
- An Associates and/or Bachelors degree in Turf Management or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in Golf Course Maintenance.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience providing input and knowledge of budget control result expectations.
- A minimum of 1 year of technical knowledge of equipment and tasks relevant to Spray and Irrigation Technicians, Landscape Foreman, Greens Keeper, Equipment Operator, and Mechanic positions.
- Current State Pesticide Applicators License or successful completion within 90 days of employment.
- Valid drivers license.
- Preferred: Thorough knowledge of general business administration practices and golf course operations practices and procedures.
- Preferred: Direct supervisory experience with ability to maintain confidentiality of club, company, and personnel information.
- Oversee, plan, and monitor daily golf course maintenance operations by coordinating tasks, managing schedules, and ensuring appropriate staffing levels.
- Approve vacation and sick leave, maintain adequate coverage, and ensure timely submission of weekly timecards.
- Collaborate with the Superintendent to recruit, interview, select, and hire employees using the companys Applicant Tracking System.
- Train, motivate, and supervise staff performing golf course maintenance tasks to quality standards.
- Assess course conditions and determine maintenance priorities.
- Oversee mowing, spraying, turf care operations, and the cleanliness and organization of maintenance facilities and equipment.
- Manage inventories of chemicals, fertilizers, and supplies with proper documentation and regulatory compliance.
- Assist with supply purchasing, irrigation materials, budget tracking, and invoice coding.
- Maintain daily and weekly logs for irrigation, wells, water usage, applications, weather data, and personnel records.
- Set up, program, and adjust daily irrigation cycles.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance for equipment with the Mechanic.
- Assist in preparing and managing the annual agronomy plan and operating budget.
- Support high industry and environmental standards for turf quality, including pesticide and fertilizer applications.
- Supervise and direct a crew of at least two full-time employees.
- Address personnel matters including pay, performance reviews, corrective actions, and hiring or termination decisions.
- Train and enforce safety practices and regulatory compliance.
- Evaluate employee performance, provide feedback, and keep the Superintendent informed on progress.
