Job DetailsJob Location: Saint Louis - Saint Louis, MO 63132Position Type: Full TimeEducation Level: 2 Year DegreeThe Field Research Tech is responsible for assisting in the operations of the Danforth Plant Science Center Field Research Site located north of St. Charles, MO. The field research site includes 100 acres of research space utilized by Danforth Center scientific teams and collaborators to carry out a diversity of projects in support of the mission of the Danforth Center, to improve the human condition through plant science. The Field Research Tech will play a critical role in execution of processes ranging from field preparation to in-season management and data gathering, through crop harvest and processing to achieve high quality experimental results. The Field Research Tech will work closely with the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm manager and will take an active role in carrying out field work, including planning, logistical, and scientific support. Collaboration within the farm staff will be importin to achieve the research goals.
Responsibilities:
Ensure field site is adequately prepared with consideration to research trial requirements
Implement appropriate and effective pesticide rotations, scouting and pest management procedures
Ensure nutrient management, irrigation, and other treatments are performed effectively and in line with experimental design requirements and/or restrictions (e.g. drought or nutrient-deficiency studies)
Work with researchers in pre-planting, planting, weeding, data collection, crossing, harvesting, and/or post-harvest activities
Assist with training research and support staff in safe and effective fieldwork practices
Assist with building and grounds maintenance
Maintain compliance with federal/state/Danforth Center safety, regulatory and containment requirements
Follow Field Research Site Safety protocols and policies
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of or willingness to learn how to operate field research equipment
Organized, timely, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
High degree of professional integrity, professional attitude, and continuous improvement mindset
Commitment to growing a diverse and inclusive culture
Capacity to communicate well amongst cross-functional research teams, field/farm professionals, Danforth Center Principal Investigators, and management

Valid Drivers License: in order to be eligible to drive a company car
Ability to work extended hours and weekends during peak operational seasons
Flexibility with regards to timing of workday

Physical Demands:
Capacity for physical in-field labor including site preparation, planting, weeding, spraying, mechanical work, sample collection, seed collection, etc.
Ability to lift and carry up to 45 lbs. (i.e., load, unload and move soil bags, medium weight tools and equipment)
Must be able to work in high heat and humidity
Flexibility with regards to timing of workday

QualificationsEducational Qualifications:
AS or BS degree in agronomy, crop science, plant biology or related discipline required, an equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree OR a High School Diploma with minimum two seasons experience in agriculture, horticulture, or related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in fixing machinery (i.e. fixing your own car, bike, etc.)
Missouri Non-Commercial Pesticide License or the ability to obtain within 12 weeks of employment
Experience in application of herbicides and/or pesticides
