Lead Groundskeeper

Status: Full-Year, Full-Time (Hourly, Non-Exempt)

Reports to: Director of Facilities

8 hours/day, hours may fluctuate with the seasons but primarily 1st shift

General Summary: The Lead Groundskeeper provides general groundskeeping services for the district and reports to their assigned Facilities Manager and the Director of Facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Plans and coordinates work assignments for groundskeepers, including but not limited to Thirlby event scheduling, field maintenance, pesticide applications, snow plowing, sanding, general grounds maintenance, etc.
  2. Determines material needs and estimates project costs from blueprints, sketches and existing conditions.
  3. Assists management with the timing and ordering of grounds and field maintenance supplies, such as paint, sand, quick dry, seed, mulch, etc.
  4. Provides primary irrigation responsibility for the district, including irrigation scheduling, repair, service, installation and evaluation of new irrigation sites.
  5. Properly maintains grounds , trees , and shrubs , including mowing, vacuuming, fertilizing, weeding, trimming, pruning, etc.
  6. Properly maintains athletic fields, including field lining, grooming, mowing, overseeding, topdressing, etc. Works with management when contracted services may be needed.
  7. Hauls and transports all grounds equipment including spreaders, vacuums, mowers, fertilizing equipment and pesticides, tractors, trailers and all other grounds equipment.
  8. Repairs bleachers, playground equipment, buildings, fencing, and other equipment.
  9. Works flexible schedule on occasion for event management, pesticide and/or fertilizer applications and mowing as dictated by weather, use or other circumstances.
  10. Performs winter season snow plowing and/or sanding.
  11. Provides primary responsibility for and performs regular service and maintenance on all grounds and equipment. Ensures a high level of cleanliness and care is maintained for all district equipment.
  12. Provides training and guidance to other groundskeepers as necessary.
  13. Assists other maintenance personnel in performing their assigned duties.
  14. Completes and maintains required records and reports.
  15. Fully utilizes the district’s asset management/work order system to accurately track all costs, repairs, preventative maintenance, etc., related to the district’s assets. Ensures appropriate equipment is asset tagged and tracked in individual work orders and within the system.
  16. When not assigned to grounds work, the groundskeeper may, as requested, substitute for custodians at any building on any shift performing regularly assigned custodial duties. (Approximately November 15-April 15 or as designated by the immediate supervisor.)
  17. Performs all assigned duties in a manner which contributes to the safety and well being of the staff and buildings.
  18. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. High school diploma or GED required, college or trade school classes preferred.
  2. A minimum of 5 years experience as a groundskeeper preferred.
  3. Must obtain, within two testing cycles , and maintain MI Dept. of Agricultural Core, Turfgrass, and Ornamental Certifications for application of pesticides.
  4. Have a valid State of Michigan driver’s license and ability to obtain within 90 days, a minimum MI Commercial Driver’s License, Class A with air brakes endorsement.
  5. Possess acceptable experience in custodial and maintenance work to carry out the assigned duties.
  6. Possess good habits, character and attendance record.
  7. Be neat in appearance.
  8. Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
  9. Possess good mechanical abilities.
  10. Be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and sketches.
  11. Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious effective relationships with staff, students, supervisors and co-workers.
  12. Ability to operate and maintain applicable grounds equipment.
  13. Have personal transportation when assigned to other locations in the TCAPS district.
  14. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  15. Capable of working from ladders, scaffolds and aerial platforms and working in confined areas such as tunnels, with proper training.
  16. Upon request, present a certificate signed by a licensed physician appointed by the school board verifying the physical ability to perform the job.
  17. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  18. Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report regularly and consistently to the assigned facility or worksite.
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity.
  4. The ability to move about the facility or building, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks.
  5. Must possess skills to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  6. Basic technology skills required to utilize computer and/or other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.) consistent with work-related tasks.
  7. The ability to listen and effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  8. The ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  9. The ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
  10. Ability to work independently and maintain effective time management.
  11. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
  12. Occasionally moves boxes, equipment, and other supplies weighing up to 50 lbs across the building for various needs.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Work may be completed in controlled temperature conditions; however, duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions. Duties may include exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.

Work Schedules:

Must be available for on-call work, overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday, when necessary.
