OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION SIX-MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Under general direction, this classification performs routine, semi-skilled maintenance work in parks and other municipal facilities. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.

Maintains turf, trees, shrubs and flower beds by mowing, edging, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating and renovating. Assists in related grounds maintenance work. Sweeps and cleans recreation areas and facilities. Erects bleachers and stands as directed. Assists in planting, cultivating, weeding, pruning and irrigating new trees, shrubs, flower beds, turf areas, and cares for indoor plants. Digs ditches, trenches and holes. Plants, waters, and maintains ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, and flowers. Removes litter and weeds from grounds, paths, playground areas and walks. Performs custodial maintenance of restrooms and community building facilities. Performs daily inspection of play equipment to assure safe operation. Follows standard operating procedures to operate pickup trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, spreaders, sprayers, and turf vacuums. Prepares ballfields for sporting events. Performs pick-and-shovel work on landscaped areas and walkways. Loads and unloads dirt, brick dust, mulch, soil amendment and tools and equipment. Picks up rubbish and litter; cleans walkways, driveways, parking areas, and drainage facilities; keeps restrooms, play equipment, and picnic and recreation facilities clean and orderly. Plants, cultivates, weeds, prunes and irrigates new trees, shrubs, flower beds, turf areas, and cares for indoor plants. Prepares soils for various kinds of planting and cultivates around plants, shrubs, and trees. Installs and operates sprinkler and irrigation system, which may involve the use of automatic controllers, sprinkler heads, and pumps. Performs routine inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems, such as cleaning, repairing and relocating sprinkler heads and cleaning and repairing of automatic valves; maintains irrigation systems by setting and monitoring automatic irrigation controls and making minor adjustments and repairs to sprinkler heads. Operates and maintains small landscape power equipment, from edgers to 70" riding mowers, and performs minor adjustments and repairs. Larger riding mowers may be utilized on ball fields that have Bermuda grass. Follows standard operating procedures; uses tractors with attachments; small dump trucks, sod and weed cutters, rototillers, and trencher. May operate vehicles including pick-up trucks with or without trailers and dump trucks. May operate tractors and backhoes on occasion. Leads and trains seasonal workers for the proper and safe use of mowers, equipment tools, and materials. Drives automobiles, pick-up trucks or other light vehicles to City buildings and facilities in carrying out the duties of their position. Ensures the Department services are provided with the highest customer service and ethical standards. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. Experience Two years of paid experience in professional grounds maintenance or related horticultural work. Education/Training High School Diploma or Equivalent. Some college level coursework is desirable. License(s)/Certification(s) Valid Class C California driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: Gardening methods and tools. Irrigation systems. Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges, and trees. Methods, tools, materials and practices used in parks and ground maintenance activities. Plant diseases, pests, and methods of control. Trees, plants, shrubs, and lawns common to Southern California and their care requirements. Skill in: Mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, planting, fertilizing, cultivating and other areas of gardening. Preparing brief, accurate oral and written reports of work performed. Recognizing common plants, plant diseases, weeds and insect pests. Using independent judgment and initiative in daily work activities. Using landscaping tools and equipment. Ability to: Apply applicable safety rules, practices and procedures. Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period. Direct the work of others. Follow directions and carry out assignments in a thorough and efficient manner. Foster a teamwork environment. Lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Load and unload heavy supplies and / or equipment from a truck or other elevated surfaces. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct. Move debris, dirt or other material from one place to another. Perform simple maintenance and repair work on gardening power equipment.

Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.

Read, write, communicate effectively and comprehend directions in English. Use hand tools such as pick, cultivator, shovel, spade, rake or similar tools and power driven equipment such as hedge trimmers, weedeaters, and blowers. Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public. Work directly with the public. Work effectively without close supervision. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others. Work with cleaning fluids, pesticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using proper protective equipment. Other Characteristics Willingness to: Work outdoors in cold and inclement weather. Work the necessary hours and times to complete goals, tasks, and objectives. Work independently and be flexible to change in assignments. Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe environment for both employees and the public. Maintain City facilities and grounds in a manner consistent with the City's high standards.
Promotional Eligibility Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.

Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: (Weight of 50%) To evaluate the applicant's horticultural skills, abilities and physical agility. Approximately the top 12 scoring candidates who score the highest on the performance examination will advance to the next stage of the selection process.

ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 50%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.

TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Any evaluation will be based on the candidate's education and experience as related to the position. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination.
