Job Description

POSITION: Groundskeeper / Maintenance 9:00am-5:30pm

RESPONSIBLE TO: Supervisor of Facilities and Custodial Services

JOB GOAL

To maintain and improve all district grounds, facilities, and mechanical systems to ensure maximum efficiency, comfort, cleanliness, safety, and an attractive educational environment for students, staff, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • 1–2 years of related commercial grounds or maintenance experience preferred; 3–5 years of commercial building experience or knowledge of all building trade skills preferred for maintenance work.

  • Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, painting, and building systems.

  • Hold a valid Class B CDL Ohio driver’s license with a clean driving record at time of application (grounds) and a valid driver’s license (maintenance).

  • Commercial pesticide/herbicide applicator’s license in Categories 5, 4C or E, 6A, C, 8, and 10 or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment (grounds).

  • Ability to operate snow removal equipment such as plow trucks, tractors, and blowers safely.

  • Ability to load equipment on trailers and tow to various school sites safely.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and understand building controls via computer automation.

  • Ability to run sprinkling systems on athletic fields.

  • Proficient in operation, repair, and maintenance of commercial lawn care, landscaping, and building equipment.

  • Ability to use and maintain various hand tools and power tools safely.

  • Required to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds in accordance with OSHA guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to organize and complete projects efficiently.

  • Basic computer skills required.

  • Willingness to help instill ethical principles and democratic values in students.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Groundskeeping Duties:

  • Maintain necessary records for custodial and grounds equipment.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on grounds and playground equipment.

  • Inspect and recommend repairs for driveways, walkways, and parking lots; perform repairs when possible.

  • Remove trash and debris from district grounds; empty exterior trash receptacles regularly.

  • Perform landscaping duties for flower beds, trees, shrubs, lawns, and mulch areas.

  • Remove graffiti from exterior of buildings.

  • Maintain lawns and athletic fields, including fertilizing, herbicide/pesticide application, seeding, mowing, and trimming.

  • Test and evaluate new materials for grounds maintenance programs.

  • Perform minor painting and repairs on outbuildings, press boxes, stadiums, concessions, storage areas, dugouts, and barns.

  • Operate tractors, mowers, lifts, trimmers, chainsaws, and other equipment safely, including work from elevated heights.

  • Keep exterior doors clear of snow, ice, and debris per fire code.

  • Wash windows and remove graffiti as necessary.

Maintenance Duties:

  • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms up to 30 feet.

  • Walk distances up to ¼ mile in a reasonable time.

  • Safely operate motorized vehicles, including towing trailers.

  • Plumbing: Install, maintain, and repair systems, piping, valves, traps, faucets, and fixtures.

  • Electrical: Troubleshoot, install, repair, and maintain motors, controls, wiring, and electrical systems.

  • Heating/Ventilating: Troubleshoot, install, repair, and maintain boilers, valves, dampers, filters, actuators, and computer-automated controls.

  • Hardware: Install, repair, and maintain doors, locks, hinges, closers, windows, and student lockers.

  • Structural: Install, repair, and maintain floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs.

  • Miscellaneous: Read and interpret blueprints; perform preventive maintenance for buildings and equipment.

Shared/Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular custodial duties in assigned areas.

  • Assist visiting members of the public using district facilities.

  • Support curricular and extracurricular events as scheduled.

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and other assigned spaces.

  • Maintain custodial closets neatly and orderly.

  • Respond to general cleanup needs as incidents arise.

  • Prepare and process work orders in the district’s web-based system.

  • Check doors and windows daily for security.

  • Report major repairs or deficiencies to the supervisor.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor of Facilities and Custodial Services in support of the job goals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT CHARACTERISTICS
  • Frequent work that may extend beyond the normal workday.

  • Work outdoors in extreme heat or cold; exposure to chemical sprays, dust, pollen, and cleaning agents.

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.

  • Occasional operation of vehicles in inclement weather.

  • Occasional interaction with unruly children or adults.

  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, stooping, and extended operation of lawn or maintenance equipment.

  • Consistent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.

  • Periods of riding lawn equipment and working at heights per OSHA guidelines.

  • Moderate noise levels.

  • Physical examination required by a healthcare provider of the district’s choice (district-paid).

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated by the Supervisor of Facilities and Custodial Services in accordance with Board policy.
