Incumbents in this position are excluded from the Civil Service system and are unrepresented.

This part-time position as a Park Laborer is on an "on-call" basis, working up to 19 1/2 hrs per week including weekends (hours may vary week to week), without benefits.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation

Under immediate supervision, assists in the performance of general maintenance in support of parks, athletic complexes, trees, and landscape operations; and performs other related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the care and maintenance of parks, athletic complexes, trees, and landscape operations. This classification is intended to facilitate the accomplishment of seasonal workload requirements. This seasonal employment is restricted to less than 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 to June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs manual labor in the maintenance and repair of park and athletic complex areas which may include watering, fertilizing, mowing, trimming and pruning greenery, pulling weeds, cultivating soil, removing debris, raking leaves, cleaning and repairing irrigation equipment, dugouts, bleachers, and restroom facilities.
  • Cleans and maintains grounds, walkways, cart paths, athletic surfaces, baseball diamonds, paved areas as and park/golf course facilities restrooms and clubhouses; picks up litter, garbage, and debris.
  • Operates a variety of manual and power-driven hand tools related to the work.
  • Participates in required training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with City and Department policies, procedures, and rules and regulations.
  • Represents the City with dignity, integrity, and the spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public.
  • Fosters an environment that embraces integrity, service, inclusion, and collaboration.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles and practices of thecare and maintenance of parks, athletic complexes, trees, and landscape operations;
  • Safe work practices;
  • Use of standard, commonly used, hand and power tools and equipment;
  • Oral and written communication skills; business English including vocabulary, spelling, and correct grammatical usage and punctuation;and
  • Principles and practices of excellent customer service.

Skill in:

  • Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions and prioritizing workload to meet operational needs;
  • Using appropriate safe work methods and landscape maintenance techniques;
  • Demonstrating independent judgment and initiative in daily work activities;
  • Communicating effectively, tactfully and positively in both oral and written form;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; and
  • Interacting with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience: No experience required. Prior experience in manual labor, landscape maintenance, gardening, or a closely related field desirable.

Other Requirements:

Must possess a valid California driver's license.

Physical/Mental Abilities:

  • Mobility - Frequent walking; occasional sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting;
  • Lifting and carrying - Occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds;
  • Vision - Ability to read fine print, and/or normal type size print and detect color; ability to read and see PC screens; ability to read and produce printed material and information displayed on a visual display terminal;
  • Dexterity - Occasional repetitive use of hands, power grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling of both hands, and reaching;
  • Hearing/Talking - Ability to detect specific noises, proper equipment operation; ability tounderstand what people are saying in normal conversation, over the telephone, frequently over noise;
  • Special Requirements - Constantly work days; occasionally work evenings, nights, and weekends; occasional driving;
  • Emotional/Psychological - Ability to concentrate, make decisions, work with the public, exercise sound judgment, handle stressful situations, and work alone;
  • Environmental Conditions - Occasional to frequent exposure to noise, outdoor conditions, indoor cold/heat, exposure to extremes in temperature, humidity or wetness; work with bio-hazards such as blood borne pathogens, sewage, waste, etc.; walking on uneven ground; working around equipment and machinery; occasional to moderate risk of exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., dirt, dust, gas, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, pool chemicals); and
  • Working Conditions - Primary work environment is outdoors; operates basic landscape maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery, such as a 3-wheel utility vehicle, infield groomer, and lawn mower, that vibrates when in use.
