Summary

Under direct supervision of the Parks Supervisor, the Irrigation Technician, assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of the City irrigation systems.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts routine inspections of irrigation and sprinkler systems to detect problems and maintain irrigation system.
  • Learns to install sprinkler systems.
  • Operates front-end loader, backhoe, power and hand tools.
  • Maintains daily work orders upon completion of work projects.
  • Organizes work orders, equipment and supplies necessary to complete work assignments.
  • Learns to oversee installations performed by contractors.
  • Notifies supervisor of inventory, parts, supplies, materials and equipment needs to complete work orders.
  • Learns to read and review plan designs and specifications.
  • Learns to conduct audits of water usage to monitor compliance with City and State water conservation and irrigation regulations and ordinances.

Other Important Duties:
  • Travels to work sites, meetings, conferences and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
Job Requirements

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of hydraulics concepts and irrigation techniques and designs.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of power and hand tools.
  • Skill in following oral and written directions.
  • Skill in completing work assignments.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., and one (1) year irrigation system installation or repair experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May be required to obtain a Texas Irrigation License within one year of date of employment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or post-offer physical exam.
  • State of Texas Class C Driver's License

Kneeling bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
Lifting raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
Mental Acuity ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site. Work Environment
Work performed is primarily:
Medium work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Equipment and Tools Utilized:
Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, other standard office equipment, cellular telephone, heavy equipment, hand and power tools, and department vehicles.
