Summary:
The Landscaping and Grounds Technician III position performs and supervises the basic to advanced functions in grounds maintenance for Casper College facilities and grounds and acts as a crew leader for assigned grounds areas.
Responsibilities:
The position of Landscaping and Grounds Technician III is responsible for supervising, maintaining and servicing the full array of grounds maintenance activities. They may work in a team setting or independently and may plan daily work assignments for themselves and assigned workers. Responsibilities range from basic to advanced in all grounds and maintenance areas on College facilities and grounds. This position acts as a Landscaping and Grounds Crew Leader and supervises the Grounds crew within the assigned areas on campus under the direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. This position has responsibility to carry out assignments without continuous direct supervision. This position reports to the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and serves as Acting Supervisor when Grounds Maintenance Supervisor is absent.
Supervise and perform mowing and edging of lawns and fields with push and riding lawnmowers, tractors and hand and power tools. Supervise and plant, transplant, fertilize, and water lawns, shrubs, bedding plants, ground cover, trees, and other plantings with tools such as hoes, trowels, shovels, and related implements. Supervise and perform cutting, trimming and pruning of trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and ground cover with use of hand or power tools including chainsaws, edger, ladders, and mechanical lifts. Supervise and perform eradication of weeds and pests using both manual and mechanical methods. Weed control can include pulling, tilling or using line trimmers; preventing weed growth by mulching; calibrating, mixing, and applying pesticides and herbicides according to manufacturers instructions and applicable laws.
Supervise and perform grounds maintenance of athletic fields and their related systems.
Supervise and perform irrigation and sprinkler systems installations by digging trenches by hand or with tractor or trencher lays and connects pipes, valves, sprinklers and controls, and properly back fills work. Supervise and perform irrigation system inspections and repairs, program irrigation systems, provide documentation regarding irrigation systems and repairs, help maintain grounds as built drawings.
Supervise and perform removal of trash, leaves, brush, and debris using rakes, blowers, vacuums, and shovels from building roofs, sewers, utility tunnels, streets and sidewalks, lawns, parking lots, building entrances, and adjacent roadways and sidewalks under the Colleges jurisdiction. Supervise and perform removal of trash cans as needed. Transport litter, plant debris, and trash to the dump or other designated area by truck.
Supervise and perform snow removal and ice control for walkways, parking lots, and building entrances with the use of snow plows, power brushes, hand shovels, blowers, salt, and ice melting compound.
Supervise and perform the cleaning of drains, catch basins, storm drains, and roof gutters. Supervise and perform the removal of stains and spills from parking lots and walkways, fill potholes in pavement, repair and maintain exterior furniture and benches.
Supervise and perform installation of Campus traffic control signage, including building and directory signage and painting.
Supervise and complete work orders as assigned. Maintain grounds maintenance material and supplies; ensure all materials, supplies, tools, and equipment are available in proper quantities.
Supervise and perform troubleshooting and minor repairs of Grounds tools and equipment such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, blowers, snowplows, ice melting spreaders, and hand tools. Supervise and perform minor maintenance on Grounds vehicles and Grounds equipment by checking fluid levels, applying proper lubrication, and cleaning after use.
Train and supervise employees; perform new employee orientation, train employees to operate equipment, train Grounds employees in Physical Plant procedures.
Carry and respond to College provided cell phone; carry and utilize a two-way radio while working.
Report concerns, hazardous conditions, and injuries/ accidents to supervisor or designee.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in the grounds maintenance field (landscaping, construction, irrigation, horticulture, etc)
Minimum of one year supervisory experience with the ability to effectively organize and prioritize assigned work and the work of others
Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, ADA, state, county, and local safety standards and codes
Knowledge of general grounds maintenance practices; commercial irrigation system installation, operation and maintenance; snow removal and ice control, pest control, and landscaping practices, as well as experience with associated tools and equipment
Experience working with office equipment such as computer, printer, fax machine, photocopier, Word processing, database and other related software applications.
Ability to perform physical labor for full shift (8 hours) and for more than a full shift (over 8 hours) with or without a reasonable accommodation
Ability to follow relevant policies, procedures, instructions and safety standards; work safely with power tools, vehicles, and machinery
Desired Qualifications:
Work experience performing grounds maintenance in the Public sector (i.e. other schools, city, county, or state agencies)
Experience in commercial landscaping
Experience designing and installing commercial irrigation systems
Pesticide applicators license
Ability to have effective working relationships with other people and communicate verbally and in writing
Previous work experience or education related to building maintenance systems (heating, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical systems)
Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid motor vehicle license at the time of hire and must obtain a Wyoming drivers license within 30 days of hire. Must maintain insurability under the Colleges insurance plan.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, working from elevated locations and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud, often requiring hearing protection. The typical work schedule is 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday during the academic year and 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. during the summers. Must maintain critical availability for snow removal and emergencies especially during extremely cold weather as safety becomes a factor. May be called back after hours, on weekends, and holidays for emergencies, special assignments, snow removal and/or any other activity which requires the position's presence on campus and/or at the assigned work station. Call back assignments are at the discretion of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or the Assistant Facility Operations Director.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk; and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include; those needed to operate College vehicles and equipment, see close-up, differentiate color, have peripheral vision, and depth perception. Frequent driving of a variety of vehicles and equipment on and off-campus will be required. Use of grounds keeping and maintenance tools such as mowers, tractors, power tools, sprayers, and other equipment is required.
